越華苑, a decades-old Spadina Chinatown institution that many Chinese Torontonians and international students grew up with, recently announced it is closing, and plenty of local diners were sad to hear the news.
That clear, deeply beefy rare-beef pho got many people through Toronto winters and is part of a shared memory of Chinatown. It’s sad to see it go, but pho culture in the GTA is still thriving. From decades-old shops on Ossington and 24-hour late-night spots to new-style bowls in Richmond Hill and Markham with 40-hour bone marrow broth and hot-stone service, there’s plenty of great pho to explore. We’ve picked 15 of Toronto’s most representative pho restaurants, grouped by area and style, with full addresses and must-try dishes, to help you find your next bowl!
Pho (phở) is usually built on beef bone or chicken broth with rice noodles, topped with rare beef, well-done beef, brisket, tendon, tripe, beef balls and more. Restaurants can differ a lot in broth sweetness, spice balance, cuts of beef and even noodle texture.
