Interview: PuriPuri, a “Not Too Sweet” Moment of Comfort in a Busy Day

A very Hong Kong obsession with detail

Many people think “Hong Kong feel” means fast and busy, but PuriPuri’s owner sees it differently: “What feels most Hong Kong to me is our refusal to settle when it comes to quality.”

In Toronto, another fast-paced city, PuriPuri doesn’t want to be one more heavy, sugary indulgence. It wants to be a healing moment where you can step away and catch your breath.

Simple, not plain: doing a few things well

Raised in Hong Kong, the owner is used to efficiency and directness. That shows in PuriPuri’s philosophy: no gimmicks and no sprawling menu.

“We focus on a few flavours and on consistent quality.” That restraint ensures every time you open a little cup of pudding, you get the same refined experience. To him, that’s the practical, perfectionist Hong Kong spirit.

Just-right sweetness: a Japanese soul meets Canadian maple

Hong Kongers have a distinctive dessert ideal: “not too sweet.”

To get that balance just right, the owner adjusted the recipe again and again. The signature original caramel pudding pairs silky egg custard with slightly bitter caramel: sweet but never cloying, a gift for picky palates.

To connect with his new home, he also created a maple flavour, adding a gentle note of Canadian maple to Japanese-style pudding. It’s more than a flavour experiment; it’s a blending of identities, carrying familiar Japanese gentleness while embracing life here and now.

Small joys: the healing power of a spoonful of pudding

“I wanted to make a dessert that brings people a small moment of happiness.”

It doesn’t take a big portion, just a spoonful. At the end of a high-pressure day or in a gap on a busy afternoon, this little cup of pudding helps you slow down. That lightness and calm is the comfort the owner wants to offer everyone working hard far from home.

The PuriPuri owner’s pick: an everyday connection

Asked where he goes when he misses home, he chose Chrisly Cafe. For him, its familiar milk tea and set meals are more than food; they’re an everyday connection. Living overseas, that familiar atmosphere is a small kind of rescue.
